Why We're Taking on 135km Around the Bay.
This October, Sam and I will be cycling 135km in the Around the Bay event - not just for the challenge, but for a cause incredibly close to our hearts: Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision, supporting vital research and treatment for Bone Marrow Failire Syndromes.
Every 3 days, an Australian is diagnosed with a Bone Marrow Failure Syndrome. Distressingly, most of them are children and young adults, and 50% will not survive.
In 2015, Kirsty's dad was diagnosed with Aplastic Anaemia, a rare and life-threatening condition where the body stops producing new blood cells. He underwent a bone marrow transplant at the Peter Mac Cancer Centre, where he shared a ward with Maddie Riewoldt, who was in the room next door.
Maddie sadly passed away from her condition at age 26. Her courage and legacy now live on through the foundation her family created to fight for better treatments, earlier diagnosis and ultimately a cure for people like Maddie, and Kirstys Dad.
